„…By offering something rather than a cliché ridden movement and superficial themes Katrandjieva provides dance nourishment for audiences starved of food for reflection…” Attitude Magazine, NY
AV@TAR is the first dance theatre staging of a contemporary Bulgarian playwright in New York City. Directed by internationally acclaimed theatre director & choreographer Antonia Katrandjieva, the world premier is based on the play „Christ & Magdalene” by Bulgarian playwright Keva Apostolova.
A mix of dance, drama, video and original sacred chants AV@TAR offers a compelling visceral, verbal and kinesthetic account of the dichotomy between matter and consciousness in our consumption-ridden society. Katrandjieva embodies mental states into emotional landscapes, physically externalises the consciousness split between the sacred and the mundane, excavating association-laden movement from human conditions and social archetypes. Viewed through the lens of the Gnostic Gospel of Mary Magdalene this eclectic physical theatre work swings boldly between Chechov’s „Psychological Gesture,” Becket’s „Absurdist Existentialism,” Brecht’s „Alienation Effect,” Bausch’s provocative „Tanztheater,” Butoh’s „raw transcendental states” and the current European avant-garde dance idiom.
AVATAR’s is performed by Overground Dance Theatre Company, sacred chants are composed by Nannette Bevalander, live music is performed by renown musicians Ina Alexandroff, Frederick Johnson, Brahim Fribgane, Victor S. Yuen and Alessandro Blini.
A post performance recital features performances by illustrious Bulgarian artists: Anna Veleva, Jo-Jo-Hristova, Petar Petrov & Marieta Mircheva.
